Contentment is not something we hear much about. Yesterday I spent time with a dear friend who is also my beautician for some pampering. After years of running her own salon, she is now working at Bunnings and seeing a few long standing clients to earn that little bit extra. She calls it her ‘play money’. Our sessions are always interesting and often filled with laughter. We are both in our 50’s and often chat about the changes we now face, physically and emotionally, as we enter into a new stage of life.
Several years ago, my friend chose to walk away from a very successful business to work in Bunnings, selling her salon, moving closer to the ocean and downsizing. All because she was lacking contentment. I am on an unexpected sabbatical and learning, perhaps for the first time, the incredible beauty and value of contentment.
The Oxford Dictionary defines contentment as a state of happiness and satisfaction. In my experience, there definition just scratches the surface. I find that there is a strong undercurrent of peace in my life as I learn to accept and be content what is.
The unexpected gift of contentment is that in actively choosing to seek and do less we create space where we can actually have, and experience more.
