Recently I faced the reality of being neurodivergent. This has caused me to experience shame, fear, guilt, worry, terror, freedom, liberation, acceptance, rage, sorrow, joy, and peace. Quite the emotional maelstrom in an interchanging flow. One of the amazing gifts this journey has brought me is the freedom from self-criticism through self-acceptance which has joyfully led me to have greater capacity to be kind towards and accepting of others. Don’t get me wrong, I still have self-doubt, but I can now understand that what I had though were character flaws that needed to be overcome are in fact biological markers that impact how my brain is wired and therefore how it functions.  This has been one of the greatest gifts I have ever received. When I find myself overthinking, people-pleasing, being highly sensitive to my environment, the energy around me or the words of others, pursuing perfectionism or failing to effectively manage my time I now stop.  I remember to be kind to myself and to stop being critical.  How does this work?  Simply by understanding myself more and consciously choosing my thoughts.

When we can acknowledge what is happening and then make a choice about how we respond to things we can release criticism. This is incredibly powerful because  instead of becoming submerged in the whirlpool of emotions that a false sense of failure can cause. We can instead respond to who and what we are, instead of reacting. This is where the freedom from self-criticism arises.  You do not need to be neurodivergent to have this experience, but you need to be willing to be self-aware.

Because of their finely tuned energetic sensitivity, horses can easily identify and reflect our core, authentic emotions, and states of being back at us in non-confrontational ways.  This is why equine informed awareness enhances our self-awareness which can lead to releasing our inner critic.
